Pregnancy goes by in a blur of appointments, cravings and lists. Then one day it is over, and you realise there are almost no photographs of it.

A maternity session with me is unhurried. We walk, we talk, I give you and your partner small things to do, and I photograph the way you touch your belly without thinking. I shoot medium format film for the portraits, because nothing renders skin and light quite like it, and digital for everything in between.

One easy hour, ideally in the softest light of the day. At the beach, in the vines or at home. Your gallery is digital, with a roll of film shot alongside for the frames that feel like heirlooms.

Questions people ask

When should we book a maternity session?

Most people shoot between 30 and 35 weeks, when the bump is round but moving is still comfortable. Get in touch in your second trimester so we can hold a date, especially for spring and summer evenings.

Beach or home?

Both work beautifully. A beach at sunset gives you golden light, wind in your dress and space to breathe. Home gives you the nursery, the cot you built together and the dog asleep on the couch. Some families do half and half.

Can my partner and our other children be in it?

Please bring them. The most moving maternity photographs are often about the people waiting with you: a big brother with his ear on your belly, a partner holding you from behind.

What should I wear?

Something that moves in the wind and shows your shape: a slip dress, a knit, an open linen shirt. Warm neutrals and earthy tones suit film. I send a short styling guide after booking.

I feel self conscious in photos. Will this be awkward?

Almost everyone says this. I talk you through every moment, give you something to do with your hands, and never ask you to hold a pose for long. Film is also very kind to skin. It softens everything in the gentlest way.
