Why film, why now

Our phones are full of video nobody watches.

We record everything and rewatch almost nothing. Super 8 works the other way round.

Because film is precious, I shoot it carefully. A few seconds of your daughter spinning in her dress. Your partner's hand finding yours. The baby's yawn. Short moments that, strung together, feel exactly like a memory.

I studied cinema, and Super 8 is where a lot of filmmakers start. It is honest and unforgiving: every frame costs something, so you learn to wait for the right one. That is how I approach your family too.

Questions people ask

Does Super 8 have sound?

Not the way I shoot it. Super 8 cameras record pictures only, so I cut your film to a piece of licensed music. It is part of the charm: you watch it the way your grandparents watched theirs.

How long is the film?

One cartridge holds 50 feet of film, which runs for about three minutes. After editing that usually becomes a home movie of around two minutes. The Long Take uses two cartridges.

Why does it take longer than photos?

Every cartridge is sent to a specialist motion picture lab to be developed, then scanned frame by frame. It is slow, hands-on work. Most films arrive six to eight weeks after the session.

How do we watch it?

You receive a high resolution digital file to play on your TV, laptop or phone, and to send to family overseas. It is made to be watched together on the couch.

Is it grainy? Will it look like the seventies?

Yes, lovingly. Super 8 is a tiny film format, so it has visible grain, soft focus, flicker and warm colour. That is exactly why people choose it. If you want crisp modern video, Super 8 is not for you, and that is fine.

Can I add Super 8 to any session?

Yes. Add a cartridge to The Golden Hour, The Afterglow, The First Hello or The Homecoming for $650. It is already included in The Home Movie and The Long Take.
