Newborn photography doesn't have to happen in a studio with a heater and a stack of wraps. I come to you, find the room with the best window light, and we spend a slow couple of hours with your family. Feeds, cuddles, nappy changes and the dog sniffing the new arrival are all welcome.

I shoot these sessions on digital and on film. Black and white 35mm for the first days, when everything is raw and a little overwhelming. Colour medium format when you are settled and the light is warm.

Our Fresh 48 session: the first two days, when everyone meets the baby. Hospital, birth centre or your own bed. Quiet, gentle, and mostly black and white.

Questions people ask

When should I book?

In your second trimester if you can. I book newborn sessions around your due date and keep a flexible window, then we lock in the day once your baby arrives.

How old should my baby be?

The First Hello, our Fresh 48 session, happens in the first days, at the hospital, birth centre or home. The Homecoming, the newborn session at home, is best in the first few weeks, while your baby is still curled up and sleepy, but I photograph older babies too.

Do you pose babies in baskets and props?

No. My newborn sessions are lifestyle sessions: your baby in your arms, in your bed, feeding, being inspected by a big sister. I never place a baby in a position they would not settle into by themselves, and a parent is always within reach.

Do I need to tidy the house?

Clear the bedroom and one living space and you are done. I look for the room with the best window light and work there. A bit of real life in the background is part of the story.

Do you use flash?

Never. I work with window light only, which is gentle on new eyes and gives film its soft, glowing look.

What about feeding and unsettled babies?

We stop whenever your baby needs you. Sessions are long on purpose so nobody feels rushed. Feeding photographs are some of the most tender in any gallery, if you would like them.

Can you photograph our birth in hospital?

Many Adelaide hospitals and birth centres welcome birth photographers, but policies differ and can change. At our first call we go through yours, and I always keep a Fresh 48 in reserve in case a birth photographer cannot be in the room.
